Following are five signs that could mean you need breast implant revision surgery.
1. Your breast implant ruptured
Under normal circumstances, your breast implant should stay intact. However, if you undergo intense physical pressure (such as a car accident), one or more implants may rupture or deflate. In addition, the implant shell could weaken over time.
Although breast implant ruptures aren’t life-threatening in themselves, they are a health hazard. If you don’t remove the implant, you could develop an infection that could become life-threatening. Also, damaged implants could create scar tissue that could change the look and feel of your breast.
2. Your breast implant is painful
After you’ve gone through your recovery period, your new breasts shouldn’t be painful or uncomfortable. If you feel pain or discomfort around your implants, you may have one or more issues that require revision surgery, including:
- Poor implant placement
- Pinched nerves
- Damaged lymph nodes
- Capsular contracture
- Seroma
If you have silicone implants, pain may indicate that your implant has ruptured and is leaking. Pain or discomfort isn’t a common side effect of breast implant surgery, so if you experience either, call us right away.
3. Your implant has shifted significantly
Normally, breast implants settle into a slightly different position or droop slightly over time. However, it’s not normal for a breast implant to move to an entirely new position or to fall lower while your nipples rise and move upward.
Several factors can cause implant shifts. If your surgeon made the implant pocket too large, your implant might drift too far away from the midline of your chest, a condition called lateral displacement. An overly large implant pocket can also cause implant rotation, which creates an unnatural breast appearance.
People with skin laxity due to aging, too-heavy implants, or post-surgery pregnancies may experience a condition called “bottoming out.” In these instances, the implant falls below your breast crease. You might be able to see or even feel the outline of your implant. Moving or bottoming-out implants may require a breast implant revision.
4. You’re unhappy with your breast size or shape
You booked your implant surgery because you wanted to be happy with your breasts. If you don’t like your new breast size or shape, a breast implant revision procedure may help. Implant revision is your best bet if you want larger or smaller implants or if you feel your breasts aren’t symmetrical.
We recommend waiting at least 12 months after your initial breast augmentation before booking a revision if aesthetics are the only reason why you’d like your implants replaced or moved. This time ensures that your body has fully healed and that your implants have settled into their final position. If you’re still unhappy a year post-surgery, call our helpful team.
5. You’ve experienced capsular contracture
Breast augmentation surgery causes the formation of some scar tissue. Scar tissue helps support your implant and maintain its positioning. However, sometimes your body mistakes your implant for a dangerous object and creates excessive scar tissue. This condition is known as “capsular contracture.”
Capsular contraction creates dense, hard tissue around your breast implant. Severe capsular contracture can create misshapen breasts that look and feel unnaturally hard. If you have excessive scar tissue, you’ll probably need a breast implant revision to improve the look and feel of your breasts.
